Compress images
Make photos smaller so they send faster and load quicker. Compare before and after, then download one image or all of them.
How it works
- Choose your images or drop them on the box above. JPG, PNG, WebP and HEIC all work.
- Move the Quality slider and check the comparison. Pick a smaller size or WebP for even smaller files.
- Download each image, or all of them in one zip file.
Private by design
Your photos are compressed by your own browser. They are not uploaded, so nobody else sees them, and there is no waiting for a transfer.
Phone photos often carry hidden details such as the camera model and the exact place the photo was taken. The compressed copies are saved without this metadata, so the location goes too. The picture stays the right way up.
We never hand back a bigger file. If an image is already compressed so well that we can't beat it, you get the original back and the list says so.
What size should a photo be for email and websites
A photo straight from a modern phone is often 3 to 6 MB and 4000 pixels wide or more. For email, WhatsApp, a web shop or a website, that is far more than needed. Fit within 1920 px with a quality of around 80 usually gives files of a few hundred KB that still look sharp on any screen.
For a website, WebP gives the smallest files and every current browser shows it. For an upload form that asks for a file under a certain size, lower the quality step by step and check the new size in the list. Keep your originals for printing, because detail you compress away cannot be brought back.
Logos, screenshots and drawings are different from photos. Keep them as PNG so text and edges stay crisp, and the tool will reduce the number of colours to make them smaller. Use the comparison and zoom in on text to check that nothing has turned blotchy before you download.
Questions
How much smaller will my photos get?
Phone photos usually shrink by 50 to 80 percent at the default quality of 80, with no difference you can see at normal size. Choosing Fit within 1920 px shrinks them much more, which is ideal for email and websites.
Which quality should I choose?
80 is a good default for photos. Go to 60 or 70 for the web, or 90 if you plan to print. Use the comparison and Zoom to 100% to check the details before you download.
Why does my PNG not get much smaller?
PNG keeps every pixel exactly, so it is big for photos. Here a PNG is made smaller by using fewer colours, which works well for logos, screenshots and graphics. For photos, choose JPG or WebP under Save as.
Can I compress iPhone HEIC photos?
Yes. HEIC photos are read on your device and saved as JPG or WebP, which open everywhere. HEIC itself is already very efficient, so the result may be a little larger than the HEIC file, but much smaller than a normal JPG from the same photo.
How do I compress a photo to under 1 MB?
Choose Fit within 1920 px and a quality of 80. Most photos end up well under 1 MB. If not, lower the quality a little.
Can I compress images on my phone?
Yes. Choose photos from your gallery in the browser, then download them one by one or all together in a zip.
Does it remove the location from my photos?
Yes. The compressed copies are saved without hidden metadata such as GPS location and camera details.
