PDF to Word

Turn PDFs into Word documents you can edit. The conversion runs on your own device, so your files are never uploaded.

or drop files here Your files stay on this device. Nothing is uploaded.

How it works

  1. Choose one or more PDFs, or drop them on the box above.
  2. Each PDF is read page by page. Lines are joined back into paragraphs, and headings, bold and italic text and images are kept.
  3. Download the .docx files one by one, or all at once as a zip.

Private by design

Most PDF to Word sites upload your file to their server and keep it there for a while. This converter works inside your browser instead. Your PDF is read on your own computer or phone, and the Word file is made right there.

That makes it safe for contracts, payslips and anything else you would rather not share. It also keeps working when you go offline after the page has loaded.

Getting the best Word file from a PDF

Converting a PDF to Word makes sense when you need to change the wording: update an old CV, reuse text from a report, or edit a letter you only have as a PDF. PDFs that were made from a text program convert best, because the letters are stored as real text.

Simple documents with one column of text come out very close to the original. Expect some tidying up for columns, tables and text boxes. Use the styles in Word to fix headings, and check page breaks before you print. If the PDF is a scan, run OCR PDF first, then convert that file.

Once the Word file is open, you can edit it in Microsoft Word, LibreOffice, Google Docs or Pages. When you are done, save it as a PDF again, or use Word to PDF on this site. Compare the two side by side once to catch any numbers or names that moved.

Questions

Will the Word file look exactly like the PDF?

Close, but not always exactly. A PDF only stores where each letter goes, not how the text was written. The converter rebuilds paragraphs, headings, font sizes, bold and italic text, page breaks and images. Complex layouts with columns, text boxes or tables come out as plain paragraphs or lines with tabs, so you may need to tidy those up. Fonts you do not have are replaced by similar ones in Word.

Can it convert a scanned PDF?

A scan is a picture of text, so there is no text to copy. When a page looks scanned, the tool tells you and keeps the page as a picture. Run OCR PDF first to turn the picture into real text, then convert that PDF.

Are images and tables kept?

Images are kept in their place in the text. Tables are not rebuilt as Word tables. Their rows come out as lines with tabs between the columns, which keeps the content but not the grid lines.

What about password protected PDFs?

If a PDF needs a password to open, the tool asks for it. The password is only used in your browser to open the file.

Can I convert a PDF to Word on my phone?

Yes. Choose the PDF in your phone's browser and download the .docx. Open it in the Word app or Google Docs to edit.

Can I convert several PDFs at once?

Yes. Choose them all, and download each Word file separately or all together as a zip.

Does it work with Google Docs?

Yes. Upload the .docx to Google Drive yourself and open it with Google Docs, or open it in any other program that reads Word files.
